Common mistakes that cost real money or admit slots

  • 01Forgetting to send transcripts from study-abroad institutions to LSAC. CAS requires every transcript from every accredited institution.
  • 02Submitting applications before LSAC has all materials. Applications cannot be reviewed until CAS report is complete.
  • 03Skipping the FAFSA assuming you do not qualify. Federal Direct and Grad PLUS loans both require FAFSA regardless of need-based aid eligibility.
  • 04Not waiving the FERPA right to view letters of recommendation. Unwaived letters carry materially less credibility.
  • 05Failing to disclose minor academic or criminal history items on character and fitness. Omission is far worse than disclosure for any honest character assessment.
  • 06Negotiating scholarship after April 15 deposit. Maximum negotiation leverage is before deposit; afterward, you have minimal leverage.
  • 07Accepting a conditional scholarship without checking retention data. Schools must publish retention rates; below 80 percent retention warrants caution.
  • 08Submitting the same generic essay to every school. Why-this-school essays must reference specific elements; generic content reads as effort minimization.
